Tepees, 47H : Type 2

1948-1953

With the factory expansion of 1948 Frankoma re-issued the Tepee shakers. The Type 2 shakers are all made on Ada clay and despite several years of production are more difficult to find than the Type 1's. By the 1950's America had put the war economy behind it and domestic miniatures were now less in demand.

John Frank made a few of the re-issued Tepees before he decided to re-work the dies to produce a more managable shaker. The new mold featured a shorter and thicker pole top to reduce breakage both during production and afterwards. And the new mold had a larger base depression to allow more room for the cork. No longer would this design tend to tip on a cork not inserted far enough.

Interestingly the avid collector can find examples of the re-issued shakers with the Type 1 base. One has to use glaze or other identifiers to place them in the Type 2 era. The classic example is the 1948 glaze redbud. Any Tepee in that glaze has to be Type 2, even if the base is still the Type 1 base.
